UEM Sunrise unveils nature-themed mural in the heart of Kuala Lumpur

UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise” or the “Company”), one of Malaysia’s leading property developers, has unveiled its nature-themed mural in the heart of Kuala Lumpur adorned with colours of the local landscapes and its rich biodiversity – a symbol to the Company’s commitment to sustainability and the environment.

Located next to W Hotel at the junction of Jalan Ampang and Jalan P. Ramlee and adjacent to Kuala Lumpur City Centre, the mural is named 'Happy Space at Lot 149’ and is expected to add a splash of colour, showcasing Malaysia’s natural beauty in contrast to the concrete jungle of Kuala Lumpur.

UEM Sunrise teamed up with local artists from E&M Services and Nippon Paint to support Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL)’s ongoing initiative to incorporate local street art into the capital city. The project started on 13 April and completed on 31 May 2021.

'Happy Space at Lot 149’ consists of seven panels which stretch to more than 150m. Each panel displays snapshots of Malaysia’s natural landscapes and biodiversity including the country’s untouched tropical sceneries alongside UEM Sunrise’s flagship development Kiara Bay in Kepong, Aurora in Australia, and the beautiful township of Puteri Harbour in Johor. For the project, 800 litres of Nippon Paint’s low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and eco-friendly paint and 100 litres of low odour wall sealer were used, enough to fill up three standard bathtubs.

“‘Happy Space at Lot 149’ represents our commitment to conservation where we strive to preserve our development’s surrounding landscape and its biodiverse habitat. Likewise, part of our sustainable cause is also to contribute to a better society and create a conducive space for the community to thrive. At the heart of it, we are here to create happy spaces and build communities.

We hope more people will be able to view our nature-themed mural once the lockdown is lifted and these bright colours can bring about some cheer and optimism that we all need in these challenging times. With the National Day just around the corner, it is hoped that this will further inspire city dwellers, especially the youth to not only value our flora and fauna, but to also appreciate art by embedding the vibrant work of our local artists into Kuala Lumpur’s urban fabric,” said UEM Sunrise Chief Executive Officer Sufian Abdullah.

E&M Services is known for their expertise in portraying the beauty of Malaysia’s flora and fauna through their murals. Eight artists, all Fine Arts Graduates from UiTM, were involved in the project. They were led by Ruhizad Mohd Ali, a full-time mural artist with 30 years of experience.

“Most of our mural creations are inspired by realism. For ‘Happy Space at Lot 149’, we wanted to showcase the beauty and diversity of our rainforest with glimpses of UEM Sunrise’s developments together. Despite some challenges in completing the mural such as weather uncertainties and the textured surface of the hoarding board, we are proud of the finished results. I am grateful to UEM Sunrise for allowing us to design its mural to enhance Kuala Lumpur’s streetscapes,” said Ruhizad, whose other works are also featured around Kuala Lumpur.

Around 30 volunteers from the Company have also dropped in, got their hands dirty and contributed their time to paint and decorate 'Happy Space at Lot 149’ with smiles alongside the mural artists on 28 April.

DBKL’s Street Art initiative to transform Kuala Lumpur into a street art capital is being carried out in stages, focusing on adorning back lanes and streets with colourful murals by local artists in and around the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
