Be a termite spy to protect your home from further damage

This article is 2 years old

In recent years, living in a three-generation household is getting more rare but I’m lucky that I’m still able to enjoy the noisy crowd under one roof. “Is that good?”, you may ask, I would surely say yes. This is because I have an important person that I admire in my family and till now she still teaches me a lot of things - she is none other than my grandma. She is always there whenever I need her. The best part is that I will never be hungry since she always kept me full with her best home-cooked meals.

With Aidilfitri approaching in a month’s time, mum has asked me to start spring cleaning, which I am reluctant to do. Grandma quietly walked towards me and said, “I’ll help you, and after that you’ll get your favourite kuih raya”. Both of us burst into laughter and immediately we started cleaning, yakking away happily.

A while later, I noticed that Grandma stopped and sat down on the sofa while staring deeply at an old family photo. Slowly she starts to shed tears. I was shocked and hurried over to console her. My grandma told me that the photo was taken at our old house where my dad and his siblings spent their childhood and growing up days. “What?! Collapsed? What actually happened? Tell me more, please!” I was so eager to find out more. Grandma said they were forced to leave the old house because most of the wooden structures in their house had been badly damaged by termites. “We were told to leave the house, or else everyone might get hurt as the old house may collapse anytime” my grandma said. During those days, our family members were not so well-versed on how to detect any early signs of termites, and ended up losing their hard earned family house to the termites infestation.

This heartbreaking story from grandma reminds me of our neighbour that we’d visited recently. She shared that she’d suspected a possible termite issue at her home but she was not sure about it. What this neighbour of mine did differently was that she took quick action on it. As an avid user of social media, she snapped a video and asked in her Facebook group to get some tips from her friends, and alas she is able to get professional service to help her with termites solutions for her home. What a huge relief for her!

It got me thinking “If only grandma or dad knew the early signs of infestation and took quick actions earlier, our old family house could have been salvaged and preserved as family heritage assets till now.
