If you want to heal the world

This article is 2 years old

Getting a medical degree is one of the most expensive endeavours a student can make, but the healthcare sector is one of the most lucrative sectors.

To top that off, becoming a healthcare expert is a noble profession. You will save lives, or at least help people make their lives better.

Almost one in two Malaysians (49% of the population) are overweight or obese.

One in five Malaysians are diabetic and almost 80% of those do not even know it yet, giving the country the unsavoury label of being the "Sweetest Nation of Asia".

Worst of all, the COVID-19 virus is particularly harmful for those with co-morbidities such as diabetes and hypertension, making healthcare professionals even more crucial to society.

The journey towards bringing the country back to good health means there is no shortage of opportunities for healthcare professionals to delve into a rewarding, satisfying career that will bloom into a life mission.

To answer the call to produce new breeds of healthcare professionals for Malaysia, UOW Malaysia College has supplemented the nation's training needs with a host of diploma programmes designed to produce experts that will strengthen the country's healthcare system.

"When you embark on a diploma programme, you learn almost immediately what you need to do to get the job done.

"Diploma students don't delve into academics and theories. They learn at once what they need to do in their upcoming professions," said Magesvari A/P Subramaniam, Head of UOW Malaysia College's School of Nursing and Allied Health.

School leavers with a passion for helping others have, in UOW Malaysia College, many diploma programmes to choose from.

DIPLOMA IN NURSING

After doctors deliver the diagnosis and issue instructions, those who work the hardest to bring patients back to good health will be the nurses.

Never was their role more visible than during the pandemic.

Stories abound on social media from COVID-19 survivors about nurses who loved them and showed boundless compassion.

This pandemic proved that when all hope was lost and the patients faced death, the last person left beside them and holding their hands was invariably a nurse.

"It is more than a job. It is a mission," stressed Magesvari.

UOW Malaysia College's Diploma in Nursing is a three-year challenge that comes with plenty of daily experience in hospitals.

The good news is that school leavers with the strength to want to heal others have a high chance of getting their education entirely sponsored.

Magesvari said the campus regularly receives nursing scholarships from private hospitals and related organisations, which are then awarded to students who not only excel academically but also exhibit an empathy towards others.

"I am happy to say that at our nursing school, our students tend to be morally strong and think of others before themselves," Magesvari declared proudly.

DIPLOMA IN PHYSIOTHERAPY

From babies born with problems to the elderly who are frail, the physiotherapist wants nothing more than to resolve their pain, stabilize their injuries and help them restore their mobility.

Students pursuing this diploma will gain deep knowledge about human anatomy and physiology.

They will also acquire insights into behavioural sciences as a means of knowing how people move the way they do so as to stop them from developing problems in their backs, hands, necks, etc, in the first place.

There will be special lessons in the fields of paediatrics, geriatrics and women's health.

And they will gain in-depth knowledge on how to treat sports injuries.

With this three years of learning, students will be ready to serve as physiotherapists, and they will additionally be able to serve in wellness centres, fitness clubs and various fitness and rehabilitation equipment suppliers.

DIPLOMA IN HEALTHCARE SERVICE

To borrow the cliché that "people's health is their greatest wealth", the healthcare service provider imparts the crucial element of wellness into any aspect of customer or guest service.

These students will acquire knowledge of biostatistics and see how to apply the health data of the population into deciding a service for them that enhances their wellbeing.

They must also learn Health and Social Care Systems, Occupational Safety and Health, Systems Analysis and Design: knowledge that is crucial for them to help people lead healthier lives at work and play.

They will also be armed with knowledge in the Principles of Entrepreneurship and Tourism, plus learning about Infection Control Measures, Healthcare Marketing and Health Industry Finance.

The goal of this diploma student is to operate businesses in the new normal.

DIPLOMA IN MEDICAL ASSISTANT

These students will be trained to work beside doctors.

They will be versed in medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, public health, pharmacology, behavioural science and nursing.

Every graduate will be accepted and registered into the Malaysian Medical Assistants Board.

To get them ready, the students will undergo extensive practical clinical placements at reputable government and private hospitals.

Armed with knowledge in pathology, microbiology, parasitology, behavioural science, nursing science, community health, emergency treatment and very much more, these students will be ready to stand in the front lines of healthcare upon graduating.

No one can claim to be free of ailments. It is left to those with a deep-seated desire to free the world from pain, those with the fortitude to venture into the field of healthcare, that people depend on.
