Berjaya Sompo organised windscreen repair roadshow as a step towards climate change

Kuala Lumpur, 20 June 2022 – Berjaya Sompo Insurance Berhad (“Berjaya Sompo”) recently launched its Windscreen Repair Roadshow at 1Utama Shopping Centre. The roadshow ran from 15 June 2022 to 19 June 2022. The event aims to raise awareness among the public on the environmental issues of windscreen waste and promote windscreen repair.

Jointly organised together with Mobile Windscreen Sdn Bhd, Nanmar Motor Service Sdn Bhd, Dr. Cermin Sdn Bhd, DW Windscreen Sdn Bhd, and our roadside assistance partners E. P. Ong Associates Sdn Bhd and RSA Auto Network Sdn Bhd, Berjaya Sompo aims to lessen the negative impact of wasteful windshield glass dumping and encourages users to prioritise repairing their windscreens rather than disposing of them. The event also saw the support from Jabatan Alam Sekitar Malaysia, who was present throughout the roadshow to promote awareness of the importance of environment conservation. 

The Windscreen Repair Roadshow is in line with Berjaya Sompo's Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) efforts. The Company is committed to environmental and climate change efforts aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. 

Mr. Tan Sek Kee, Chief Executive Officer of Berjaya Sompo, said, “Windscreens are made of sand amongst others, and it takes a lot of energy resources to produce a windscreen which contributes to pollution. Disposing of a windscreen however small the chip or crack basically means that it will land up in a landfill and it will remain there for a long time. Do we really need to replace every chipped or cracked windscreen? The answer is a big NO. The technology to repair windscreen has been around for many years.”

Key benefits of windscreen repair compared to replacement include the amount of time saved; a chipped windscreen can take as little as 30 minutes, allowing the users to get back on the road sooner without burning a hole in their pockets by replacing their windscreens. Berjaya Sompo has over 42 windscreen panel repairers with 208 branches nationwide to serve its customers. 

According to SW Corp, Malaysians produce 38,200 tons of wastage daily, in a year, we are producing close to 14 million tons of wastage with an estimated cost of around RM2 billion. Glass contributed 3.3%, which means we are dumping 460,000 tons of glass that cost around RM66 million and part of it are windscreens. A repaired windscreen means one less non-recyclable glass sent to the landfill, which is a good thing for the environment, as the polyvinyl butyral film (PVB) in between laminated glass takes a significant period to decompose.

Mr. Tan added, “As a responsible corporate entity and as part of our ESG initiative, Berjaya Sompo is organizing this event today together with our partners to educate and promote to our clients and general public the benefits of repairing their chipped or cracked windscreens.”
