Buku Jalanan Chow Kit (BJCK), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that Allianz Malaysia Berhad (Allianz Malaysia) has partnered with since 2019, has won a €25,000 (RM115,033) grant from the Allianz Group’s Social Impact Fund 2022 initiative.

The Social Impact Fund is the Group’s key programme offering a strategic opportunity for operating entities (OEs) around the world to receive funding for their local Corporate Citizenship activities that go beyond mere charitable donations, focusing on creating measurable impact and inter-sectoral partnerships. BJCK and Allianz Malaysia were among the 16 winners out of 27 applicants from across the globe.

Allianz Malaysia via its corporate social responsibility arm, Allianz4Good has been providing support to the non-governmental organisation through relief contributions and further nominated BJCK for the programme.

The contributions include aid for BJCK students and their families that were particularly vulnerable to the social and economic impact of the pandemic due to their precarious employment and lack of social security.

Head of Allianz4Good, Ng Siew Gek said, “There is an emphasis, both from BJCK and Allianz Malaysia, in providing quality and holistic education to their students to ensure that they become agents of change for their families and the community as a whole. We are more than happy that the Group shares the same sentiment and supports us in this partnership.

“To date, BJCK has leveraged on a multitude of partners, including Allianz Malaysia, to ensure that its operations are sustained. They are now able to grow in scale and scope due to their success in the previous years. The grant received from the Social Impact Fund will aid BJCK financially, particularly in the refurbishment of its current school building into an in-situ community centre,” she said.

BJCK’s community centre explores a radical mixed-use concept of adaptively reusing an existing commercial shop-lot as a centre for education, recreation, upskilling, food production, and cultural preservation.

The goal of this project is to make innovative learning methods and skills-based learning available to the urban poor and underprivileged families living in the Chow Kit area, whilst providing them with the resources to break the cycle of poverty.
