Daehan Rehabilitation Hospital Putrajaya Uses State-Of-The-Art Next Step Robotic Therapy

This article is 2 years old

Patients who have suffered from stroke, traumatic head injuries, spinal cord injuries, and generalised leg weakness will often find their ability to walk greatly impacted. In the past, the only solution available was ankle-foot orthotics (leg braces) as well as manual therapy but thanks to technological advancements, the Next Step Robotic gait assisted ambulation therapy that uses robotic technology can now make the recovery process quicker and more efficient with optimal results.

Through prolonged training with the machine, it can improve ground walking function and independency; range of motion of lower limbs; walking speed and endurance; strength and balance; muscle tone; and manage spasticity.

Patients who would benefit best from the Next Step Robotic Therapy are those who have/had:

  • Stroke

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)

  • Cerebral palsy (CP)

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Paraplegia (paralysis of the lower half of the body)

  • Muscle weakness due to immobilization

  • Joint replacement surgery

  • Weak lower limbs due to deconditioning

Through the guidance of a therapist, a harness is strapped around the patient’s hips—which supports their body weight. His or her feet are then placed on the footplates where the robot will then take over to guide the patient’s ankle movements—mimicking walking.

The goal here is to train the patient’s lower body muscles and fix gait patterns (which can prevent fall injuries). In the long run, patients should be able to walk without, or at least, reduce their dependency on assistive devices.

Throughout sessions, Daehan’s physical therapists can also use the machine’s AI-based system to access and save training protocols that have been customised to each patient’s condition.

Thanks to Daehan’s commitment to delivering only the best in rehabilitative care and providing Next Step Robotic Therapy, patients can now take a step towards a better life.
