#ShopeeGivesBack with Shopee Supermarket to Kechara Food Bank

This article is 2 years old

#ShopeeGivesBack is running a Food Bank Donation campaign to raise awareness for the Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) Food Bank Program. From 20 October to 14 November you can contribute to KSK by purchasing the donation SKUs on Shopee Supermarket. Shopee users can also purchase bundle goods of F&B and essential items on a daily basis, via the Donation Entrance, available only for Android users.

The KSK food bank is in need of assistance with food and provisions to provide for the homeless and urban poor. The meals are pre-cooked and packed by volunteers. There are two forms of distributions - lunch and street distribution.

Lunch Distribution

Carried out on Monday to Friday, from 10:30am to 1:00pm at Kechara Soup Kitchen, Jalan Barat, Off Jalan Imbi, approximately 100 meal sets are distributed per day. These meal sets include Halal meatless hot food, biscuits, mineral water and a disposable mask. A majority of the recipients are senior citizens.

Street Distribution

Held on Saturdays from 4:00pm to 10:00pm in the streets of Klang Valley, Penang, Ipoh and Johor, approximately 1,200 meal sets are distributed per week. These meal sets include Halal meatless hot food, buns, fruits, biscuits, mineral water and a pack of disposable masks (5-in-1). There are also activities and services available such as food packing, medics, registration, counselling and a response team. Both forms of distribution require volunteers to drive to the locations.

The Food Bank Program receives families referred by the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia (Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat) along with the collective effort of volunteers for door-to-door house visits. The Food Bank delivery delivers dry food provision to 3,300 registered poor families nationwide with distribution taking place on weekdays from 2:00pm to 5:30pm, and Saturdays from 11:00am to 2:30pm. There are a variety of recipients including senior citizens, disabled (OKU), Orang Asli and families with many dependents. Each food pack includes rice, cooking oil, biscuits, instant noodles, canned food, sugar, a disposable mask box and soap bars worth RM150.

The program also has surplus fresh produce like vegetables and fruits donated by partner supermarkets, and rescued, channelled and distributed to partnered charity homes or distributed to selected PPR homes. Surplus collection happens Monday to Saturday from 11:00am onwards at supermarkets nationwide while surplus distribution occurs Monday to Saturday from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at selected PPR homes.

It is challenging for KSK to be able to provide for the homeless and urban poor.
