TNB lights up lives with IJN Foundation

This article is 2 years old

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) understands that having a family member or caregiver present at IJN improves the patient’s experience and recovery. That is why TNB collaborated with IJNF and assisted in the refurbishment of IJNF’s dormitory and initiated the Better Brighter Dormitory on 13 November 2017.

It takes a village to care for the seriously ill — and there are many ways that we can help. When you or a family member is experiencing a serious illness or a long period of recovery, it can surely cause both emotional and financial strain. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the uncertainty that comes with surgery and the road to recovery.

Caregivers or family members would want to be near their loved ones admitted to the hospital. However, for those that stay far away from the hospital, it would be a challenge to travel and find an affordable and convenient place to stay near the hospital.

Often, they would end up sleeping on chairs in the hospital just to be close to their loved ones in case they take a turn for the worse.

In 2009, the IJN Foundation Dormitory began operating
As IJN Foundation (IJNF) continues to stay true to its mission of making high-quality heart treatment accessible to all deserving Malaysians, they also want to care for their families and meet their needs and expectations.

Hence, the dormitory was built for family members or caregivers to accompany patients in open wards and critical care areas. It also allows them to stay at an affordable rate while the patients receive treatment. Those who are travelling from outside Klang Valley and are accompanying patients that stay in the open wards and critical care areas for a long time are given priority and due consideration.

With this dormitory, the foundation can avoid patients from deferring their treatment or admission to the hospital. Thus, avoiding delaying treatment which otherwise may result in sudden cardiac arrest and if not treated in time may cause death.

In 2017, TNB established a partnership with IJN Foundation to support the cost of renovation of the dormitory and support part of the operation and management cost of the dormitory. Thus, the start of a Better Brighter Dormitory IJN Foundation - Tenaga Nasional initiative.

The total amount contributed by TNB for a period of five years (2017 to 2021) was up to RM1.4 million as there was a cost of RM400,000 to support the renovation and an RM200,000 cost per year for operation and management. The dormitory can accommodate up to 56 people and provides basic amenities including air-conditioning, washing machines, a common area and lavatories to provide a comfortable and affordable place to stay for those looking after post-surgery heart patients who are recovering at respective critical care areas.

Convenience: The dormitory is for the caregiver and family members who accompany patients at the critical care areas and open wards.

Comfort: The dormitory can accommodate up to 56 people.

Peace of mind: It has basic amenities including air-conditioners, washing machines, a common area, and lavatories.

The IJN Foundation-Tenaga Nasional dormitory offers two separate dormitories for females and males with bunk beds and single beds, a few family rooms and accommodation at this dormitory are charged at an affordable rate.  The facilities provided in this dormitory give the patients peace of mind knowing that their family is nearby and their wellbeing is being taken care of and therefore, patients are more motivated for a full and speedy recovery.

These overall initiatives and efforts in empowering IJNF as the shelter provider for patients’ caregivers are part of TNB’s agenda in Responsible Energy Transition in brightening people’s lives.  This is also in line with TNB’s commitment to environment, sustainability, and governance (ESG) and ensuring sustainable business growth and the well-being of the communities.
