Fighting Chance For M40 and B40 Students

This article is a year old

To parents in the M40 and B40 groups who struggle because their children are ready for tertiary studies, help is on hand at UOW Malaysia.

Recent new scholarships and financial aid programmes at UOW Malaysia have made it possible for their children to receive Australian quality education right here in Malaysia.

The recent one is called the Dato' CQ Teo Scholarship, dedicated to the children of parents whose combined income is under RM10,000 a month.

The merits of helping bright students in need is dedicated to the memory of Dato’ Teo Chiang Quan, the founder of Kolej Damansara Utama (KDU).

In early 2021, before vaccines arrived in Malaysia, Teo contracted the Covid-19 virus. He fought it for 21 days but succumbed to the disease.

UOW Malaysia and Paramount Corporation Berhad set up this scholarship in honour of Teo's legacy and philanthropy.

KDU, in 2018, became a part of University of Wollongong (UOW), one of the best public universities in Australia, and this 100% scholarship ensures that promising students from low to middle income families will benefit from UOW Malaysia's sterling education standards.

This financial assistance to Malaysian students is open to those pursuing the diploma, bachelor’s, master’s, or Doctor of Philosophy levels.

They must be pursuing their courses at UOW Malaysia full-time and have no financial means of their own.

This scholarship not only covers all their tuition fees, but also expenses required for educational aids and reasonable cost-of-living expenses throughout the student’s period of study at UOW Malaysia.

Another financial aid programme in UOW Malaysia is dedicated to the B40 group in Malaysia's Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), which comprises Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak.

Named the 88 Captains Scholarship, this aid is for students from families in the NCER with a combined household income of under RM4,849.

Founded in early 2022, 88 Captains is a society formed by top industry achievers in Malaysia's northern region.

At the formation of the scholarship in Dec, 2022, the society declared that it aimed to help 30 to 40 students for a start with an allocation of between RM15,000 and RM20,000 per student.

Those who receive aid for more than 30% of their tuition fees under this scholarship will join the 88 Captains Student Ambassador Programme of 48 hours per year during their studies.

This is to give the students valuable industry exposure by acting as ambassadors of the 88 Captains at various events, attending leadership development programmes and workshops.

Recipients of the 88 Captains Scholarship can also expect to receive permanent job offers guaranteed for three years within the NCER after completing their education.

Aside from these two, UOW Malaysia has more than 20 scholarships, financial aids, grants and discount schemes available for its students.

"As providers of the top private education in Malaysia, we don't want financial issues to be a hindrance to students who prove themselves worthy.

"We are always ready to help, because we want our students to succeed," said UOW Malaysia Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Chong Beng Keok.
