This article is 9 months old

The 4th episode of GenZ @ The Podium was aired on the 30th September 2023 and it was remarkably intense. The topic titled Should Malaysia Adopt Youth Contract to Ease Youth Unemployment'' was debated heatedly by 20 debaters from all over Malaysia. The session was moderated by the Assistant Director at Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) under Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia, Mr. Mohamad Ika Danial Abdullah. This session was also joined by YB Danial Gooi Zi Sen, EXCO Belia, Sukan dan Kesihatan Negeri Pulau Pinang and YB Najwan Halimi, EXCO Belia, Sukan dan Keusahawanan Negeri Selangor as commentary guests.

Organised by the KiniEvents and supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, International Republican Institute (IRI) as Collaborative Partner, Malaysian Institute of Debate and Public Speaking (MIDP) as Soft Training Skill Partner, Experiential Design Team (EDT) as Metaverse Partner. Joining us this year as Co-Partners are UNDI 18, Institute for Research & Development of Policy (IRDP), Malaysian Youth Association of Diplomacy and Policy (MYADP), UNDI Sabah and The Risers. Last but not least, our media partners on board, Malaysiakini, KiniTV, Cilisos Media, Astro Awani and SAYS.

The debaters who participated in this session were aged between 17 to 25 years old and they have highlighted an exploitative solution to the crisis of youth unemployment by addressing the fundamental issues of skills mismatch, insufficient experience, and discrimination in the job market.

Abigail Maya Surin, a 18 year old student enrolled at INTI International College Subang was awarded the Best Debater for this motion topic’s session. She was deemed outstanding by the judging panel due to her compelling argument where she emphasized how some corporations were reluctant to hire youths because of the lack of skills required by the employers. In order to safeguard against the exploitation of youth, she advocated detailed base guidelines for the establishment to follow when devising their employment schemes. Furthermore, she provided well-crafted rebuttals posed by fellow debaters, demonstrating her proficiency in the subject.

The Best Debater was selected by representatives of the organiser and the partners. The panel of judges were Chia Ting Ting, Chief Commercial Officer of Malaysiakini Group; Hanif Abdullah, Senior Program Consultant, Malaysia of the International Republican Institute; Diana Rose, Events Producer of Kini Events.

The politicians concurred that the young debaters had some great points particularly emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the utilization of current support systems as a more practical and less intrusive strategy. This included involving the private sector in training and enhancing the professional capabilities of the target demographic, equipping them with the necessary skills for the contemporary job market.

YB Najwan Halimi, EXCO Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship of Selangor State; “I’m truly inspired by the passion and determination of the young people who have engaged in the debates on the pressing issue of the unemployment, is a testament to shape better future we are facing”

“Investing in our youth is an investment to our country and innovation of our workforce. We invest in your future and we commit to ensure your success”

YB Daniel Gooi, EXCO Youth, Sports and Health of Penang State; “Both Government and Opposition side manage to put out substantive arguments. Besides that, PSDC (Penang Skills Development Centre) we are providing type of skills that are going to prepare our youth on the actual job challenge and we also provide incentives and allowance to undergo the training”
