"Pasar Malam Eco" a dream project for SMK Seri Pekan at Toyota Eco Youth 2023/2024 Competition

This article is 9 months old

The night market, known as pasar malam, is an integral and lively aspect of Malaysian culture. This bustling locale offers both locals and tourists an immersive experience in the sights, sounds, and flavours of Malaysia. The ambiance is dynamic, filled with vendors energetically showcasing their products and the enticing aroma of local delicacies wafting through the air. Despite being a hidden gem, the crowded nature and alluring scents at the night market can be overwhelming. The sensory overload is compounded by the heat from bulbs and lights, as well as the prevalent use of fuel-based generators at many stalls. Unfortunately, this contributes to an atmosphere that poses not only potential harm to visitors but also has adverse effects on the environment.

Hence, a call was made for the "SP Eco Squad" from SMK Seri Pekan, Pahang, to address the situation. The squad is participating at the national level competition of Toyota Eco Youth 2023/2024 where they will be presenting the project during the exhibition and closing ceremony in January 2024. The primary objective is to enhance the current state of pasar malam by introducing an environmentally friendly innovation: the "SP Solar Generator" and advocating for the use of LED bulbs.

Both the solar generator and LED bulbs offer numerous advantages in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability. The solar generator taps into the sun's power, providing a clean and renewable electricity source that reduces dependence on fossil fuels and minimizes carbon emissions. Additionally, LED bulbs are highly energy-efficient, consuming significantly less power than traditional incandescent bulbs while still delivering bright and long-lasting illumination. Together, these technologies contribute to a greener and more environmentally friendly future.

SP Eco Squad presented their project and idea to the His Majesty Al-Sultan Abdullah and the Deputy Minister of Education, Dato’ Lim Hui Ying during Eco Schools Malaysia & GEP Roadmap 2030 event recently

This initiative stems from the squad's thorough observation and analysis of the conditions at Tapak Pasar Malam Tasik Sultan Abu Bakar, Pekan, a local night market site. They discovered that 70% of the stalls in this location relied on fuel-based generators and traditional light bulbs. The incessant noise and vibrations from these generators not only disrupt the environment but also contribute to air pollution through emissions.

Being one of the 15 participating teams in the Toyota Eco Youth 2023/2024, SP Eco Squad could win a portion of the overall prize pool amounting of RM77,000!
