Wipro Unza’s Committed Towards Continuous Steering Top Notch Halal Standards

This article is 5 months old

Wipro Unza (M) Sdn Bhd (WUM) is a well-known largest local cosmetic and personal care manufacturer, owns and manages full upstream to downstream processes with stringent halal procedures and regulatory compliance. We operate two factories, have the largest and most advanced halal skincare Research & Development Centre, and employ more than 2,000 employees nationwide, producing over 600 halal certified products. Our range of personal care and household products have been a staple in the households of Malaysians. Our established brands include Safi, Aiken, Romano, Eversoft, Dashing, Carrie Junior, Enchanteur, and Sumber Ayu.

Over the years, WUM has worked diligently to ensure our products are not only meeting health and quality standards set by the authorities, but also qualify for Halal certification. Our entire production chain, from sourcing up to manufacturing and packing, fully complies with Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia’s (JAKIM) requirements. Till date, more than 600 products marketed locally and abroad are recognized with this Halal certification issued by JAKIM. Aside JAKIM, our products are also being endorsed by Majelis Ulamak Indonesia (MUI), the largest Muslim market.

Maintaining Consumers Trust

According to Rozaina Mahmod, Corporate & Regulatory Affairs Manager, handling Halal Compliance, “We work in tandem with the regulations set by the government halal authority, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and also JAIS”. She added that “We have put in place and practiced a comprehensive and effective traceability system that is in full compliance with JAKIM’s requirements”. Rozaina also reiterated, “We ensure that our raw materials, additives, processing aids, tools and equipment, and even our production system, product processing and the entire plant premises, all meet the stringent standards set by JAKIM.”

According to JAIS’ spokesperson, “To obtain Halal Certification is not difficult for as long as the company sincerely understands and practices the requirements of the Malaysia Halal Certification Procedure Manual (MPPHM) 2020 and the Malaysia Domestic Halal Management System 2020. He added, “But what is more difficult is for the organization to diligently commit in maintaining the control of overall halal production processes. In general, the public is very aware that any processes related to the industry are not static and ever so evolving following the current needs. WUM understands this and undertakes this responsibility without compromising.” Furthermore, WUM is one of the companies in Selangor that has been granted whitelist in halal applications, a privilege to have their halal applications approved in a shorter timeframe than the standard process.

Extending our role in knowledge sharing

Wipro Unza now acknowledges there is more than just being halal compliant. The need to share our knowledge in halal practices, especially in halal cosmetics alongside with regulatory compliance has led us to the birth of our CSR project, Giving Back to Community: Sharing Our Knowledge. This initiative has seen expansion to many private and local universities engaging students and lecturers in having a better and wholesome understanding on Halal Cosmetics and its compliance.

Professor Dr. Azman Ab. Rahman, Director of IFFAH, USIM during his opening speech for the Letter of Intent Signing Ceremony with industry strategic partners on 6th December 2023 at Kota Seriamas Golf & Country Club.

According to Prof. Dr. Azman Ab. Rahman, Director of Institute of Fatwa and Halal (IFFAH), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), “Wipro Unza has all along been our strategic partner in sharing their knowledge through courses, trainings, and seminars related to Halal Cosmetics and Regulatory Compliant Value Chain. Wipro Unza has moved past the initial stage of being another halal compliant company. Now, WUM is very active into halal regulations as well as in community engagement, spreading halal awareness education to all levels especially students.”

He also added that Wipro Unza gives more to the community by formulating SAFI Sertu Scrub, Halal Certified by JAKIM. This scrub simplifies the sertu process that requires one to obtain clean clay to wash the limbs, clothes, places, utensils, and equipment that come into contact with the najis mughallazah seven times, one of which is with soil- mixed water without comprising the way of cleaning via syarak. This initiative highlights Wipro Unza as a company that not only prioritizes obtaining halal certification for its raw materials, processes, and products but also provides a solution for the Muslim community to easily access the Sertu Scrub for their cleansing needs.

Prof Azman also stated that he and IFFAH’s team is looking forward towards more beneficial collaborative work with Wipro Unza after the signing of Letter of Intent with IFFAH, early December 2023.
