This article is 3 months old

Each year, on May 21, tea producers around the world celebrate International Tea Day (ITD). Designated by the United Nations, the Day aims to raise public awareness of the importance of tea for development, sustainable livelihoods as well as to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Here in Malaysia, BOH, the trusted tea grower of Cameron Highlands and the nation’s largest tea producer, has always supported these aims and objectives.

Jason Foo, CEO of BOH Plantations, said, “This year, our ITD celebrations had an added Ummph as BOH turns 95 this year. In fact, BOH’s nine-decade milestone lends parallel perspective to the growth of Malaysia’s own tea industry. The nation’s first tea garden was established by BOH in 1929 in  Cameron Highlands.

“Now, 95 years later, we are pleased that responsible and sustainable tea growing practices set in place have sustained the conditions ideal for tea growing and tea production. This has ensured the continuity of the tea industry and safeguarded the livelihoods of those in the industry.

“The aspirations of ITD very much aligns with BOH’s focus on Brewing for Tomorrow which calls for us to be future thinking, mindful to nurture sustainabiliTEA and the connection with and between our communiTEA,” said Foo.

This year, as is the ‘BOH ITD tradition’, cups of great tasting BOH tea were handed out to the public around its office area in Kuala Lumpur and a 95th Anniversary cookie was included.

Foo shared that BOH’s celebration of International Tea Day over the years has also included awareness initiatives at its tea gardens in the Cameron Highlands. The welfare of tea workers who work tirelessly to ensure that perfect cup of BOH tea is given prominence through continual enhancements in their work and living arrangements.
