Finding Home at ISKL: Celebrating the Class of 2024

This article is 2 months old

"The countless memories, laughs, tears, and growth that this place has fostered will always insulate the walls of the home in our hearts. It will always be the source of familiarity and comfort when almost everything seems so new and daunting. And when we do get to come back for those brief moments, this home will always greet us with love, with sunshine, and with life. So much life. It will always say, welcome home."

These poignant words from Rika Singh, the elected speaker for the Class of 2024’s graduation ceremony at The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL), invite us all to reflect on what 'home' truly means. With over 70 nationalities present at ISKL, the concept of home extends beyond a physical space; it is a nurturing environment where students grow, learn, and form lifelong connections. This sense of belonging and community makes ISKL a true home away from home for its students.

On June 1, 2024, ISKL celebrated the graduation of 132 High School seniors, marking a significant milestone in their lives and underscoring the school's commitment to inspiring learners to shape their path as global citizens. The Class of 2024, adorned in blue and white batik sashes designed by students, represented ISKL's dedication to honoring Malaysia's rich culture and showcasing the school's diversity and history. This year's ceremony was particularly special with 17 "Lifers"- those who have attended the school for all 12 years of their education. Their continuous journey through Elementary, Middle, and High School is a testament to the strong bonds one can have as an ISKL panther.

ISKL's Head of School, Rami Madani, captivated the audience with his powerful address, which was live-streamed worldwide. He spoke of the graduates' resilience and the importance of embracing the journey ahead with courage and determination. "It's like standing at a launching pad and about to fly into the beautiful, rewarding path into the skies. You want the right wind to carry you on your way, and you want to rely on your skills and determination to navigate that journey. You are not the first nor the last to navigate such a journey," he said. "However, your journey is unique to you, to you alone."

High School Principal Jeff Farrington, who emceed the ceremony, reflected on the transformative experiences of the past four years, including the Global Action Program and the challenges posed by the global pandemic. "Some view this (school) as a period of time as something one has to get through or even endure," he shared. "As my reflections came into greater focus, I came to see school as a center for development. A learning community you are privileged to be a part of in your journey toward betterment. A school is a place specifically and purposefully designed to help you become a better person–to help you present your best self when you step outside into the real world. "

Richard Martin, a beloved Social Studies teacher chosen by the graduates to speak, shared wisdom on navigating the future. "As you enter your early adult life, graduates, you'll continue the journey of developing just who you are, then making decisions about what you want to do," he said. “Take action where you can to bring more light to the world. Most importantly, good graduates; be happy. Life is far too brief to squander your days and worry and regret."

The ceremony culminated with the symbolic moving of the graduation cap tassels from right to left, followed by the joyous cap toss. Jeff Farrington reminded the graduates of their achievements and the diverse paths they have taken to reach this moment. "Each of you has taken a distinct journey to get here today. We are humbled by what you have accomplished and admire how you have supported each other through this journey. We have reached THE moment, and we are proud to celebrate you now."
