Create special fund from disposals of 1MDB assets

This article is 5 years old

LETTER | We, the concerned citizens of Malaysia, urge the government to create a special fund by legislation where monies received from the US Department of Justice (DOJ)  or elsewhere from the disposals of 1MDB assets are remitted.

This special fund will be utilised solely to fight against the spread of Covid-19 and render financial help to those affected by the virus.

The special fund should be managed by a non-partisan group representing the government, opposition and civil society representatives.

Such non-partisan legislation will address the concern of the DOJ, if any, that the funds will be properly utilised for the people of Malaysia.

Recently Jho Low's Hollywood house was sold for RM80 million and this can form part of such a fund better than what the present government has started.

We hope the committee shall be comprised of two MPs from Perikatan Nasional, two MPs from Pakatan Harapan and four civil society members.

We hope this committee will carry the trust and amanah of the people in this crucial time in our nation.
