LETTER | Hello 2021, goodbye 2020

This article is 4 years old

LETTER | Exactly one decade is all I have experienced life as it is, but the tenth year of my life was the worst.

The year 2020 was the worst because of this pandemic caused by the coronavirus. We were all stuck at home and gosh, you bet, my brother and I were extremely bored!

The pandemic was so terrible that the government was forced to implement the movement control order (MCO), conditional MCO and recovery MCO – all nothing but some variations to the acronym for the movement control order.

In some other countries, the MCO was known as the lockdown. In Singapore, it was called the circuit breaker. Fanciful names they all had, but it simply meant that we must exercise social distancing by staying at home, in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

When we were out of our house, we had to wear face masks to protect ourselves from the coronavirus. It was so uncomfortable to wear the masks everywhere we went.

We could not play with our friends. Our trips overseas had to be abandoned. In school, we had to sit far from each other and it was very hard to communicate with my friends. No thanks to the virus, I felt that it was so inconvenient with so many new norms.

Indeed, 2020 was a dreadful year and now we have entered into 2021. I wish 2021 to be better than 2020.

It can be better if everyone cooperates in our battle against the coronavirus. I am reminded by the words of former US president Lyndon B Johnson, who once said: “There are no problems we cannot solve together, and very few that we can solve by ourselves.”

On a personal level, 2020 is the year I had the worst itchy scalp. I hope that this will heal soon. I am determined to get rid of this itchy scalp problem by using the medicated shampoo that my father bought for me.

Finally, I hope 2021 will be a better year. A year filled with joy and renewed hope. All the troubles will fade away and our lives will be peaceful again.

Goodbye to 2020 and the coronavirus. You have haunted us enough, and we look forward to 2021!
