LETTER | Did Malaysia embolden Myanmar?

This article is 4 years old

LETTER | As the junta stomps over democracy in Myanmar, the world takes notice and lends its united voice of strong disapproval.

Meanwhile, in Malaysia in February last year, we witnessed how a democratically elected government had its rug pulled right under its feet giving way to an unelected pool of politicians taking over the helm of the nation.

Is there any difference between what happened in Malaysia and what has just unfolded in Myanmar?

The only difference perhaps is in Malaysia it was the politicians who staged the coup. Whereas it is the military that did the thieving job in Myanmar.

Now, the question that begs the world's attention is whether precedence has been set. And whether more nations will take the cue and do so in the months ahead.

As the Covid-19 pandemic wrecks more havoc in nations, would it also be a very conducive climate giving more clout to such undemocratic governance taking shelter behind emergency rulings?

Wonder what US President Joe Biden and his democrat team will have to say to such undemocratic developments in Southeast Asia while China remains determined to let no one derail its global politico-economic interest in the world.
