LETTER | PDRM - an enforcement trendsetter

LETTER | The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) is a trendsetter.

This is unprecedented. It started with revelations or alleged unlawful conduct and political interference of PDRM by the outgoing IGP. It undermines the integrity, legitimacy, and professionalism of the force.

A Malay proverb says “kalau tiada angin masakan pokok bergoyang”.

This Hari Raya, PDRM again stands out with creative initiatives to catch SOP offenders.

Besides roadblocks, they are also involved in monitoring social media postings. Additionally, they are updating the interstate application system to weed out fake documents. Technology also helps with deployment of drones to catch violators. Violators will be caught red-handed with a special team conducting surveillance to look out for significant numbers of parked vehicles in an area or number of footwears outside a residence.

Kudos to the police for ensuring strict adherence of SOP during Hari Raya.

I trust other enforcement and government agencies can emulate PDRM by practising the above and come up with more creative ideas in their daily tasks. We can then be proud of our rule of law and enjoy a more peaceful Malaysia.

Politicians should know their boundaries because they come and go and we want a peaceful harmonious environment.

I found it strange when some politicians said the revelations by the IGP should have been discussed internally. Did they not listen or read what was said, where the IGP did inform the prime minister of the discontentment?

Further, this issue is between the top two. Do we expect their subordinates to solve this issue?

Ministers, as elected representatives, must at all times exercise their powers fairly, responsibly and honourably. PDRM should be impartial, obey legitimate orders and owe their duty and loyalty to the people of Malaysia and no one else.

The above said, now is the time to take immediate actions to provide the necessary resolve to undertake comprehensive reforms to strengthen not only PDRM but many other agencies such as the MACC, Immigration Department, etc.

More than a week has passed and many police reports have been made. I trust that actions are being taken to investigate the allegations and not wasting time on SOP offenders only.

By the way, the police should continue with these creative actions even after Hari Raya and go for more serious offenders than SOP violators. We still have a lot of work to do on loan sharks, gangsterism, illegal gambling, money-laundering and such.
