LETTER | Parliament must convene before Aug 1
LETTER | We, citizens of Malaysia, respectfully reject the suggestion of Dewan Negara president Rais Yatim and Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun to convene Parliament earliest at the end of August and latest in early September.
We always had the position that our Parliament should have convened in March when the Yang di-Pertuan Agong made his polite statement in February that Parliament can convene during the emergency.
We view this suggestion by Rais and Azhar to be in direct contradiction with the spirit of the message by the Agong. His Highness indicated in February that Parliament can convene during the emergency which means before the emergency is set to end on Aug 1.
Further to that, the Agong, together with his brother rulers on June 16, indicated that Parliament should convene with immediate haste. Any educated and well-mannered citizen of this country can easily understand the polite but stern message that Parliament should convene before August since the rulers have declared the emergency will officially expire on Aug 1.
We, citizens of Malaysia, will not agree to any date later than Aug 1. We regret that our Parliament has been kept silent from scrutinising the Perikatan Nasional government's spending and actions that have brought this country to the verge of bankruptcy and pose a serious threat to our lives.
Enough excuses and delays. Open our Parliament with utmost haste before the expiry of this emergency.
