LETTER | Deal with complaints against the police sternly

This article is 3 years old

LETTER | When there are complaints against police officers for misdemeanours and ill-discipline, there must be a quick reaction to investigate and the result made known as soon as possible.

Otherwise, discontent will fester which is not very good for all of us.

Already, the people are facing daunting problems from the Covid-19 shutdown, rains and floods. I am sure they do not need the police to add to their problems.

The police are the symbol of law and order and authority. If they are accused of committing wrongs, I think the ramification is far greater than ordinary people committing crimes.

Why do we keep hearing people complaining about the police? Surely it is not easy or a trivial matter to accuse the police of something.

As far as I understand, most would not want to have any “skirmishes” with the police if they can help it. Hence, when an accusation is made against the police, there must be an immediate investigation and result made known.

Some of the complaints against the police are really very painful to hear or read. They are just so awful and roguish.

We had a woman under remand accusing a police officer of forcing her to perform oral sex on him. Then, we had another complaint by a flood victim alleging that police officers swiped the food that he ordered that was sent to the police tent because of the flood.

In both instances, it is just so vile and so distasteful. Even common folks do not do things like this, what more if they are police officers.

Of course, most police officers are not like that. But this is beside the point.

The police enjoy enforcing power and authority. When we have ill-disciplined police like this, the punishment must be made an example.
