LETTER | Anwar, don't dilly-dally naming ministers

This article is 2 years old

LETTER | The newly minted prime minister should name his new cabinet ministers as soon as possible.

While he may not necessarily rush into naming the full cabinet, he could probably name the few critical ones in the first round. Those he should name as soon as possible include:

  • Deputy Prime Minister 1

  • Finance Minister

  • Home Minister

  • Defence Minister

  • Education Minister

  • Health Minister

  • Law Minister

  • Economy Minister

Four days have passed and the rakyat are eagerly waiting for, at least, some key positions to be filled.

Any delay could send wrong signals out into the public domain and the government would be dangerously exposed to unwanted speculation and fake news.

Anwar Ibrahim must be firm and not be seen even remotely as being pressured by the leaders of the various political parties that are part of his unity government.

The unity government is made up of nearly 15 individual parties and that is indeed setting a new precedent for the country.

Anwar needs to get the ball rolling as far as the cabinet appointments are concerned.

In less than 24 hours of getting the job, demands from various directions have already poured in.

The expectations are extremely high and whatever is said and done, there will be groups that will use Pakatan Harapan's GE15 manifesto as a yardstick to measure his commitment to the promises made.

Now that the dust has settled in Pahang and Perak, and the issue of premiership is over, it is time for Anwar and his upcoming cabinet to act.

All eyes are on him. Anwar should at least make a statement as to when he is expected to name his cabinet, partially or fully.

Yes, he needs time but how much will be appreciated by all?
