LETTER | Let's have books on unsung heroes of our nation - the civil servants
LETTER | I am writing to share my recent experiences during visits to popular bookstores in Kuala Lumpur and express my disappointment regarding the limited diversity of available reading materials.
While these stores boast an impressive range of books on various subjects, I was disheartened to find an overwhelming abundance of publications centred solely on Malaysian politicians.
As a concerned citizen, I believe it is time we shifted the focus to acknowledge the unsung heroes who are the true backbone of our nation - the civil servants.
It is undeniable that the success stories of our country do not materialise solely due to the efforts of politicians, but rather owe their existence to the diligent minds within the civil service.
Our civil servants contribute significantly to the economy, social progress, prosperity, conflict resolutions, social justice, rural development, poverty eradication, education, trade negotiation, and defence, just to name a few.
Their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts behind the scenes deserve recognition and appreciation.
When I visited these bookstores, I hoped to find literature that sheds light on the invaluable work of civil servants, their achievements, and the challenges they face in their respective domains.
It is through their expertise and commitment that policies are crafted, institutions are developed, and the nation progresses.
However, the overwhelming dominance of books focusing on politicians only perpetuates the notion that political figures are the sole driving force behind our nation's achievements.
By showcasing the remarkable stories and accomplishments of civil servants, we can inspire the next generation to consider careers in public service.
These stories will highlight the vast array of opportunities available within the civil service and encourage young minds to contribute their talents towards nation-building.
Pivotal contributions
Moreover, a greater emphasis on books concerning civil servants would also foster a deeper understanding and appreciation among the general public for the vital roles they play.
It is essential for us, as a society, to recognise the pivotal contributions made by these dedicated individuals who work diligently, often without receiving due credit.
I urge bookstores, publishers, and authors to take note of this discrepancy and work towards a more balanced representation in their offerings.
By diversifying the range of books available, we can provide readers with a broader perspective of our nation's accomplishments and aspirations.
Let us not confine ourselves to a singular narrative; rather, let us celebrate the diversity of talents and expertise that lie within the civil service.
I urge the book industry to reflect on the overwhelming focus on books centred around politicians and consider the importance of highlighting the invaluable contributions made by civil servants.
Their commitment and dedication deserve recognition, and by sharing their stories, we can inspire future generations to follow in their footsteps. It is through their collective efforts that our nation thrives and prospers.
