LETTER | Traffic operation: Let us make cops’ effort a permanent success

This article is a year old

LETTER | Indeed, it is a refreshing hope to hear that the Kuala Lumpur police will be conducting a massive integrated traffic operation to curb various traffic offences, in collaboration with other enforcement agencies starting July 1.

Hopefully, this clean sweep operation will put fear into the hearts of traffic offenders as much as it will bring relief to all law-abiding motorists.

For far too long we have witnessed the corrosion of road behaviour. Both motorcyclists and cars, as well as commercial vehicle drivers, have earned Malaysia the unworthy label of “dangerous road users”.

Perhaps, there is no need for the cops to dish good advice to errant motorists anymore. We have been doing that for decades through various awareness campaigns and it did not help.

So just pin errant motorists where it hurts most, for example, with heavy compounds and keep them waiting in the sun and rain by the roadside to get the ticket served.

If other countries (including our neighbours) can make their roads safe with law-abiding motorists, it is about time to come down hard once and for all in Malaysia.

We cannot be spending public funds for decades trying to teach road users good behaviour.

I hope the cops, in collaboration with all other relevant enforcement agencies, will make this July 1 operation most meaningful.

Certainly, law-abiding motorists will give their thumbs up for this massive operation.

And please also include failure to heed turn signals, as well as recalcitrant road users who turn angelic on spotting a checkpoint, only to become raging devils when out of sight.

Perhaps, using drones would help to pin those who cheat.
