LETTER | Malaysia loses yet another towering hero

LETTER | One “MS” commented in Malaysiakini that “Lawyer, activist, and political blogger Haris Ibrahim - a true Malaysian in the best sense of the word - is one of the finest political activists the country has produced. Fearless and selfless, he has sacrificed much in pursuit of a better Malaysia for all.”

There could be no better words to accord in memory of this legend, Haris Ibrahim, who passed away yesterday, Aug 5, 2023.

May his soul rest in peace and the Mercy of Allah be upon him.

Indeed, Malaysians who knew this “soldier of moderate Malaysia”, or even came across his piercing statements and soul-rocking articles, will forever remain indebted to him for his selfless sacrifices, pain, and struggles to put some sense into the country’s crumbling political landscape. 

In a country that is constantly punctured with racial and religious divisiveness, the late Haris stood tall in giving us hope for a better Malaysia.

Such gifts of true nationhood may never be acknowledged by politicians, for people like Haris truly fought for unity and patriotism without greed in their hearts.

His passing on must fire our hearts with a renewed passion to keep fighting for the good of the nation and pry our beloved country free from the greedy, grabbing, plotting hands of corrupt power.

Haris, I will always treasure the encouragement you gave me to keep writing for the love of our country and its people’s betterment.
