LETTER | Lost battles in M’sia spell disaster

This article is a year old

LETTER | Will the ban on the Swatch brand watches purportedly peddling LGBTQ+ culture end up hanging as an albatross on the nation?

Albatross here is to be understood as “a continuing problem that makes it difficult or impossible to do or achieve something”.

Let us take an honest audit of the many other actions taken on various social and political problems but ending up with an albatross syndrome.

The Mat Rempit menace continues to grow despite various measures taken by authorities.

The drug abuse curse is so widespread and rooted that no one dares to even reveal the complete numbers or face the truth.

In fact, the country is also fast becoming a safe haven for the transit of dangerous, illicit drugs.

The story of corruption is plastered all over the walls of the Malaysian social fabric, political landscapes and economic frameworks.

Despite the talk, allegations and countless cases in court and convictions over these past decades; despite all the local and foreign media exposes - corruption remains stubbornly glued on the Malaysian map.

The political road map is tattered thanks to the 3Rs (race, religion and royalty).

The six state elections campaign period is a clear indicator of how bad to worse we have become in diffusing this “time bomb” of ethnic divisiveness, religious discord and radicalisation, and attacks on our sovereign tradition.

And now with the Swatch watch dilemma, we have just added another potentially disabling factor to our national future.

All these liabilities will snowball over a period of time and we will eventually and inevitably succumb to the forces of destruction. Then it will be too late to regret, let alone wanting to reset a nation.

It is increasingly clearer by the years and decades that our nation is fighting far too many losing battles owing to corruption.

Losing the war on graft

As we keep losing the war on corruption, we will unleash greater power into the hands of dangerous leaders and their extreme political parties.

As we fail to arrest and be rid of the many social rots in our midst, we would have to surrender to the likes of Mat Rempits, the greedy business operators, and of course, the politically ambitious individuals who will not stop shy of corrupt means to power.

The truth is time is against us. We are in a serious and paralysing dilemma. No one has the will to take that right turn for the nation. Period.
