LETTER | Let our camaraderie be guiding light in New Year

This article is 7 months old

LETTER | As we draw the curtain on 2023, it is important for all of us to reflect on the year that was. Asking questions and making resolutions are all too familiar. What could I have done better for the family, in my job, for the country? We try to be better with each passing year. That is the aim, that is what we would like, and in a perfect world that is what is expected.

Hence, I urge all Malaysians to follow what is right, follow what your heart tells you. Do the right thing and change to be better. Keep the faith in your respective religions, believe in the good of others and, above all, practise moderation.

It will be folly of me to say that there will be provocative instances in our lives. However, there is no need to take the aggressive or reactive path. There is certainly no need to raise voices.

I know there are times when the ugly side of society is too much to bear. We do not need to look far; just go on social media and every day we are bombarded with messages which carry so much hate and violence. This is not the Malaysia that was, it is not the Malaysia that is, and it will certainly not be tomorrow’s Malaysia. You and I have a responsibility towards each other to ensure it does not happen.

There will be situations where the spirit of harmony, peace, and togetherness will be put to the test by selfish and irresponsible individuals who only seek to divide and disrupt. Pay no attention to these quarters.

Let me remind everyone that the spirit of camaraderie is strong and alive within all Malaysians. It is this very spirit that has taken us through thick and thin and will continue to serve as a guiding light as we navigate 2024 and beyond.

Please remember our Rukun Negara and observe these national principles for inspiration, hope, and a strengthened sense of unity. Allow this symbol of nationhood to be our guide for a better Malaysia.

I would like to wish all Malaysians a Happy New Year.
