LETTER | Kelantan syariah law issue: Stop politicians' explosive sentiments

This article is 5 months old

LETTER | The Federal Court’s decision to annul 16 provisions in the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (I) Enactment 2019 is being dangerously exploited by politicians.

Government and rulers must diffuse the explosives before the nation is maimed permanently.

If what is reported is true, the PAS secretary-general has openly declared war on the government and rulers by stating that the Federal Court ruling was a “dark day in history for Muslims”.

He further spiked all the other states that make up Malaysia with fear, claiming that the Federal Court’s annulment of syariah law enactment in Kelantan would affect other states too.

This claim is bordering on treason, is it not?

In a speech before more than 1,000 supporters gathered outside the Palace of Justice, Takiyuddin Hassan said the decision should serve as a lesson for Muslims.

Politicians must be immediately stopped from undermining the justice system which is the “central nervous system” of any nation.

His seeming hope that all parties, including the government, will ensure that Islamic laws are upheld, certainly undermines the nation whose majority Muslims may now be incited into believing that the government and rulers are not the true protectors, custodians and guardians of Islam.

By further questioning and painting a dangerous perception over the civil court, he in all probability is dividing the Muslims along explosive ideologies.

What is worrisome is that the joint chairperson of Gerakan Selamat Syariah, Zai Mustafa, was also reported to have indicated that "the group will submit a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the sultan of Selangor, the chairperson of the national council for Islamic affairs".

Politicians and all those aligned with political ideologies must stop chipping away at our unique Constitutional Monarchy system.

Do not drag the rulers in to further your political agendas. The country will be devastated over time.

Opportunist political wannabees who think they can ride on this civil versus syariah battle as how PAS is making it out to be should also be stopped in their tracks.

A panel of nine judges, chaired by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who reached a majority decision of 8-1 that the state assembly had no power to approve the provisions in the enactment because the offences were already covered under federal law, cannot be wrong.

They must be protected too.

I pray our Madani government will take the bull by the horns and not go down in history as the leadership that dumped our beloved nation in a religious pit of battles.
