Citing reform agenda, Nurul Izzah rejoins PAC

This article is 6 years old

Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar has rejoined the Public Accounts Committee after stepping down last month in protest against its leadership.

"The structure of the PAC which provides checks and balance is crucial to the country," she was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

"I decided to rejoin the PAC after discussing the matter with Pakatan Harapan chief whip Johari Abdul, and getting the approval of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohd Ariff Md Yusof."

Nurul added that she will attend the PAC meeting today at the request of its secretariat.

As the PKR lawmaker noted, the reform agenda should be prioritised in serving the rakyat and the country.

Nurul quit the PAC on March 22, which followed Ronald Kiandee being retained as its chairperson despite his defection from Umno into Bersatu.

She had insisted that the PAC be headed by an opposition lawmaker to ensure accountability of the executive.

In its election manifesto, Pakatan Harapan had pledged to pick an opposition lawmaker to head the committee.

It is worth noting that Nurul quit as PKR vice-president last December, citing her ideals and principles.

Today, the government gave in to pressure from the public and lawmakers alike and decided to replace Kiandee with BN Parit Sulong MP Noraini Ahmad.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is expected to move a motion himself to change the PAC chief.
