Malaysian injured in Taiwan earthquake - Wisma Putra

A Malaysian was injured in a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Hualien County, Taiwan today, according to the Foreign Ministry.

In a statement this evening, Wisma Putra said the man was struck by falling rocks while visiting the Taroko Gorge National Park and is currently being treated at the Hualien Tzu Chi hospital.

The earthquake occurred a 1.01pm (local time), followed by a second tremblor measuring 4.1 magnitude at 1.17pm, the statement added.

"The Foreign Ministry will continue to monitor the victim's condition and extend necessary aid.

"Malaysians affected by the disaster and in need of help from the consular can contact the Malaysia Friendship and Trade Centre in Taipei," said Wisma Putra.

Meanwhile, Taiwan News reported that the Malaysian tourist was pinned beneath rocks.

Another woman on the same site sustained injuries to her head, the English language newspaper reported.
