Parliamentary committee to review appointment of CJ, IGP
The Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Public Appointments will review the recent appointments of Abdul Hamid Bador as inspector-general of police and Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat as the chief justice.
The committee’s chairperson William Leong said the panel will meet with the Judicial Appointments Commission tomorrow to discuss Tengku Maimun's appointment.
He added the committee will also convene to discuss Abdul Hamid's appointment on a date which is yet to be fixed.
"The Special Select Committee shall discuss and review the appointments of the chief justice and inspector-general of police within the spirit and letter of the federal constitution, relevant specific legislation, and terms of reference of the special select committee, in the exercise of the powers of the legislature as the second pillar of government.
"The discussion and review of the appointments by the special select committee are in furtherance of the aspirations stated in Promise 12 and Promise 16 of the Pakatan Harapan manifesto," he said in a statement.
Leong said this specifically concerns the restoration of the dignity of the Parliament, and for the latter to serve as a check and balance on the executive.
For now, the committee does not yet have the powers to confirm key appointments, as the relevant laws have not been amended.
