N Korea calls UN an unfair organisation, vows to fight sanctions
North Korea has called the United Nations (UN) an unfair organisation that represents the privileges of just a few countries, saying that the sanctions imposed on Pyongyang are a violation of its sovereignty that it will try to "hit back and crush".
"What cannot be tolerated is that resolutions have been adopted through the international stage, including the UN by legitimising force and arbitrariness of certain countries," the North's Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on its website and quoted by Yonhap news agency.
"And such injustice has been committed in broad daylight as sanctions being imposed on victims by attackers just because they are defiant," it added.
The ministry called the UN sanctions on its regime a "severe violation of our sovereignty," which North Korea will not tolerate.
The ministry also complained that there is a great deal of "inequality" among UN member countries, adding that the organisation is dictated by the "law of the jungle".
North Korea is under multiple UN Security Council sanctions for its nuclear and missile provocations. The United States is leading the global sanctions regime to force the North to give up its nuclear weapons programme.
Pyongyang is pushing for major sanctions relief that it sees as necessary for
rebuilding its economy. Washington remains firm in keeping the sanctions in place until the North's complete denuclearisation.
Nuclear talks have been stalled as the February summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump ended without a deal as they failed to find common ground over Pyongyang's denuclearisation steps and Washington's sanctions relief.
