Umno constitution - ROS already bars convicts from posts, says Mat Hasan
There is no need to amend the Umno constitution to oust leaders who have committed wrongdoings, said acting party president Mohamad Hasan.
This is because the Registrar of Societies already has a rule that prevents those convicted from contesting or holding party positions.
"There is no need for Umno to make any amendments on the matter.
"Other proposed amendments (to the Umno constitution) are made for the betterment of the party, not to get rid of anyone as claimed by certain quarters," Mohamad was quoted as saying by The Star.
He was commenting on reports that proposed amendments to the party constitution that were currently on the midst of being discussed were meant to ensure that Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Najib Abdul Razak could no longer hold any party position.
Zahid is facing 87 charges of corruption while Najib is facing 42 charges.
Zahid, who is on garden leave as Umno president, is said to be mulling a return to active duty.
Previously, Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam claimed a provision was proposed to automatically terminate the membership of those convicted of corruption or other crimes.
However, he said the amendment has since been dropped.
