Police say probe into alleged Perak exco rape not biased
The investigation into an alleged rape case implicating a Perak exco member is being done according to standard operating procedures (SOP), and as such there is no urgency to detain the suspect.
Responding to demands by certain quarters that the exco member concerned - Paul Yong Choo Kiong - be arrested, Perak police chief Razarudin Husain brushed off allegations that police investigations were biased and said the cops were conducting the investigation according to existing provisions of the law.
"The arrest will be made if the suspect obstructs the investigation or disturbs the victim or if the suspect is a flight risk.
"If there are are no further investigations (involving him personally), then there is no reason to detain the suspect.
"Under the law, there are bailable cases and once the investigation is completed, we give (police) bail," he told Utusan Online in Ipoh today.
On July 8, a 23-year-old Indonesian maid lodged a police report alleging she was raped by her employer at his house in Meru, Ipoh. Yong, in a statement soon after, strongly denied the allegation.
The Tronoh assemblyperson said he was "shocked and baffled" by the accusation.
"I hereby unequivocally and categorically deny the allegation. I reiterate that I have never raped or sexually assaulted her," he said.
On the progress of the probe into the case, Razarudin said cops have submitted their investigation paper to the state prosecutor, while awaiting medical and forensic reports.
"We are expecting to obtain these reports in two to three weeks," he said.
Razarudin added that the 23-year-old victim will be in the country until investigations are completed.
