Standoff in mosque as group tries to disrupt Wan Ji's sermon
More than a dozen police officers were deployed at Masjid Ar Rahman at Kampung Parit Melana in Durian Tunggal, Malacca this evening as protesters attempted to disrupt a sermon by Wan Ji Wan Hussin.
The protest was organised by the Malacca chapter of Gerakan Pembela Ummah.
The group was unhappy that Wan Ji would be delivering a sermon and had sought to stop it.
Police responded by forming a line to prevent the protesters from advancing.
"This is Allah's house [...] if you want to listen, it's okay but if you want to cause trouble I won't allow," said a police officer.
After some 10 minutes, the group relented and moved outside the mosque.
Earlier, ahead of Wan Ji's arrival, more than 50 people gathered outside the mosque to protest
After the standoff ended, Wan Ji proceeded with his sermon as several police officers remained in the mosque to stand guard.
The protesters continued to linger outside the mosque for a while but subsequently dispersed.
