Gas leak sees over a hundred students sent home in Malacca
Some 120 primary school students in Malacca were sent home following an ammonia gas leak at a chicken processing factory in Serkam today.
According to state Education Department director Abu Bakar Sahari, the fire and rescue department ordered the SK Paya Redan building vacated at 11.30am today.
Parents were instructed to take their children home at 12.30pm due to “safety factor”, he was quoted saying by Sinar Harian.
Sinar further reported that a school staff is receiving treatment after inhaling the gas, while nine factory staff were rushed to hospital after suffering breathing difficulties.
“So far, there are no instructions for the school, 1.5km away from the factory, to close tomorrow.
“It depends on the police report whether the area is free from any dangerous gas pollution or not,” Abu Bakar reportedly said.
