Why fight statelessness if we can sell ICs, DAP Youth quips
DAP Youth chief, Howard Lee, said if the "insane" allegations of the sale of MyKads to China nationals are true, the party can easily make a profit instead of pushing to solve the matter of statelessness.
"If this has even a hint of truth to it, DAP would not need to openly raise the issue of statelessness and red MyKads to the Home Affairs Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
"It would be much easier and more profitable to simply sell MyKads to the pending applicants directly without a word," he said in a statement today.
Two weeks ago, six individuals, including a National Registration Department (NRD) assistant director from Penang and a businessperson were slapped with 32 charges for selling MyKads and birth certificates to foreigners.
The businessperson, Lai Chin Wah, had then hired DAP's Jelutong MP RSN Rayer as his lawyer.
Rayer had come under fire for taking the job, spurring allegations that DAP was behind the scheme to sell national documents.
Prior to that, Kepong DAP had also been accused of registering MyKad for undocumented Chinese nationals but the NRD had refuted this.
Lee said DAP Youth was fully against the sale of MyKad and those who are involved in the crime.
"Corrupt transactions of interests in exchange for citizenship and/or its documents is nothing short of a betrayal of our nation- in short it is treason," he said.
He called on the government to take swift and stern action against those responsible.
