Anwar has coffee with Azmin amid rift
PKR's top two leaders, who have been at loggerheads with each other, held a meeting in Parliament this morning following calls for reconciliation.
Apart from PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and his number two, Azmin Ali, secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution was also present.
Anwar later posted a picture of the meeting on his official Facebook page.
"Having coffee with the deputy president and secretary-general at the Parliament lounge," he wrote.
An eyewitness claimed that it was an amicable meeting which lasted about 30 minutes but was in the dark about what the pair had discussed.
It is an open secret that the relationship between Anwar and Azmin had been strained for a long time with PKR splitting into two camps.
The situation worsened when Anwar appointed Azmin's defeated rivals into the PKR leadership, citing the need to be inclusive.
In June, the emergence of a sex video in which Azmin was implicated had led to speculation that the rift was beyond repair.
Azmin, who is also the economic affairs minister, had denied he was the person in the video. He claimed that it was part of a nefarious campaign to ruin his political career.
He also insinuated that people linked to Anwar were behind the video while the police later claimed that the leader of a political party was the mastermind behind the circulation of the recording.
However, Anwar denied any involvement in the matter.
Speculation had also been rife that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad preferred Azmin to succeed him despite an agreement that the baton would be passed to Anwar.
Although both Mahathir and Anwar have claimed that the transition of power would take place as promised, their respective supporters, however, have been firing salvos over this issue.
