Masjid Tanah Bersatu polls nearly postponed due to disturbance

This article is 4 years old

The party elections at Masjid Tanah Bersatu division was nearly postponed today after there was some disturbance at the Pekan Masjid Tanah Bersatu branch.

The disturbance started around 12.15pm when several Srikandi (women's wing) members questioned those who were registered before 11.30am, which was the closing time for registration.

However, the acting permanent president of the Pekan Masjid Tanah Bersatu women’s wing failed to provide an explanation, which caused the disturbance to occur.

All the shouting forced the Bersatu state party election committee chairperson Shamsir Harun to intervene by declaring that the Srikandi, Armada (youth wing) and the branch meetings would have to be postponed to a later date.

However, several youth members were dissatisfied with Shamsir’s decision and claimed that the youth and the branch meeting should be allowed to continue as they were not involved in the disturbance earlier in the women's wing.

Shamsir stood by his decision causing a group of youth members to rush in his direction but Shamsir was successfully escorted into the hall by about 10 People’s Volunteer Corps members.

The ruckus caused the meetings of 10 other branches to halt and the situation became uncertain when Shamsir was said to be having a meeting with the party election committee on their further action.

Around 12.50pm, Shamsir appeared on stage before announcing that all the meetings will be allowed to continue.

The Masjid Tanah Bersatu division will see Entrepreneur Development Minister Redzuan Yusof and Masjid Tanah MP and former Umno Puteri chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin fight it out for the position of division chief, along with the division secretary A Lukman Ab Ghani.
