AG Chambers to wait for more clarity before deciding on caretaker gov't

This article is 5 years old

The Attorney-General's Chambers will wait for more clarity before detailing a caretaker government.

"The situation is just too fluid hence insufficient clarity," attorney-general Tommy Thomas told Malaysiakini.

The AG Chambers had initially planned to issue a press statement on the appointment of a caretaker government following Dr Mahathir Mohamad's resignation as prime minister.

Mahathir had also resigned as the Bersatu chairperson, suggesting that he may be at odds with Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin who earlier today announced the party was quitting the Pakatan Harapan government.

The Harapan government collapsed with Mahathir's resignation but even without the resignation, it would have been a minority government as 26 Bersatu MPs and 11 former PKR MPs had quit the coalition.

There is a possibility that an MP would still be able to form a new government if the person can prove majority support to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

If that doesn't happen, fresh elections would likely be called.

Mahathir's resignation follows attempts to form a new coalition to oust the current government.

Rebel PKR leader Azmin Ali, who had since quit the party, together with Muhyiddin, BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, GPS president Abang Johari Openg and Warisan president Shafie Apdal, yesterday met the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong on forming the new coalition.

However, the ruler had asked for more time to decide on the matter.
