Petronas urged to review SOPs, improve emergency response

Petronas has been urged to review the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and improve its emergency response plan following a fire incident at the Pengerang Integrated Complex which killed five people, near Kota Tinggi, Johor Baru, last night.

Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said said the country's oil and gas company was also urged to carry out more awareness and early education programmes on disaster management.

“Such incidents should be avoided as it is the government megaproject that costs billions of ringgit. It is feared that such incidents will affect the confidence of potential investors and stakeholders," she said in a statement today.

Azalina said the safety of workers and the surrounding population should be prioritised.

She said she believed that the locals were beginning to panic and worry about their safety as it was the second fire in less than a year. The first fire incident was in April last year.

"I believe in the credibility of Petronas in solving this problem. I call on all parties including the federal government, state government, and local authorities to work together to resolve the issue,” Azalina added.  — Bernama
