Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that security forces had begun cordoning off specific areas near the market with razor wires in the early hours of the morning, sparking speculation of a lockdown.

In a statement later confirming the lockdown and listing the affected areas, Ismail Sabri, who is also defence minister, said the order would cover an estimated 2,900 residents and business premises.

He said a medical base will be set up at the enhance MCO area.

“To ensure the order is followed, police, armed forces, civil defence forces, Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) will be monitoring the area,” the minister said.

Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah said she will be supplying food baskets to the area to residents, including migrants and refugees living there.

“My office has been working along with the National Welfare Department (JKM) to prepare food baskets for distribution to those in the area.

“Since yesterday, my team has prepared 1,200 baskets that will be distributed starting today by JKM. Door-to-door distribution has already begun, including for migrants and refugees,” she said in a statement.

The PKR MP said those in need of assistance can also contact her office at 011- 1140 3861.

Earlier, Bukit Gasing assemblyperson Rajiv Rishyakaran said his office, too, was working with the Welfare Department to get food packs out to affected residents in his constituency.

Residents are advised to contact the Petaling Jaya control room at 016-980 9389 or the Petaling Jaya police district headquarters operations centre at 03-7966 2222 for help or enquiries.
