No decision from Umno’s deliberations on DPM post, and other news you may have missed

1. Sources who attended the Umno supreme council meeting on Thursday said the matter of nominating a candidate for deputy premiership was discussed, but no decision was made. Supreme council member Annuar Musa said he is not in the running for the post.

2. Langkawi MP Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed his views on the situation in France were misrepresented, while condemnation continues against the killings in France and Mahathir’s statement. Tens of thousands have also gathered around the world to protest against French President Emmanuel Macron.

3. The enhanced movement control order in Taman Semarak, Tawau, has been expanded to include shops after residents held a demonstration to demand food supplies. New rules on goods delivery and food vendors were introduced.

4. Activists launched a campaign to petition all state and federal lawmakers in Selangor to oppose the degazetting of the North Kuala Langat Forest Reserve. A scorecard has been made public to show which representatives are supporting or opposing the initiative, or have yet to reply.

5. A study commissioned by UN agencies in Malaysia found that female-headed households are especially disadvantaged by the Covid-19 crisis and appear to be recovering more slowly after various socio-economic sectors have reopened.

6. The Selangor state government said it is confident that newly introduced measures will fully resolve water supply disruptions caused by pollution. It also continued its penchant for suggestive acronyms with the formation of Majlis Wanita Selangor (ManiS).

7. DAP said the ball is now in Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s court as Pakatan Harapan has made it clear it is prepared to hold discussions with the government on Budget 2021.

8. Schools in Johor Bahru and Samarahan have been ordered to close amid the rising number of Covid-19 cases, while Special School Entrance Assessments (PKSK) for Form 4 students are postponed.

9. Muhyiddin said the government is considering temporary work permits for undocumented migrant workers to address labour shortages in the oil palm and rubber industries. Meanwhile, Malaysian Trades Union Congress has called for an investigation of a worker who lost his hand in a workplace accident at Top Glove's Ipoh factory.

10. The Registrar of Societies said it is still processing Parti Pejuang Tanah Air’s (Pejuang) application for registration, and the party’s pro-tem committee has been told to complete its documentation. Pejuang has also been warned not to use its logo and symbol before the registration is complete.
