Report: 16 in a household caught Covid-19 after Klang Valley trip, one dead
COVID-19 | A family of 16 in Labis, Johor, have reportedly contracted Covid-19 after spending about a week in the Klang Valley, resulting in one death.
According to a report by Oriental Daily yesterday, all 16 members of the family lived in the same house. Among those who were infected, the youngest is two years old and the eldest 60 years old.
The report said the family had travelled to the Klang Valley for family activities from Dec 17 to Dec 25 last year.
This included a 60-year-old woman with a history of high blood pressure and diabetes, who was admitted to hospital after the trip when she developed a fever, cough and breathing difficulties.
She was admitted to Segamat Hospital when her condition worsened and she died there on Jan 3.
The report’s description of the deceased matches Death 501 announced by the Health Ministry the following day, where the deceased was referred to as Case 118,722.
Based on the case number, she was likely to have been diagnosed with Covid-19 sometime between noon of Jan 2 and noon of Jan 3.
As the woman’s condition became serious, Oriental Daily reported that her family members had visited her in Segamat in late December.
A day after she passed away, one of her relatives, who had close contact with the deceased, tested positive for Covid-19.
“Following contact tracing by the Health Ministry, it was found that all 16 of the woman’s family members had been infected, thus the cluster has grown to 18 people.
“The ministry has arranged for the quarantine of the 16 who tested positive, some of whom had been hospitalised to receive treatment,” the report said.
The report added that the cluster caused the largest increase in Covid-19 cases in a single day for the Segamat district in 10 months.
