Covid-19 (Aug 6): 160 deaths, 20,899 cases

This article is 3 years old

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 20,899 cases of Covid-19 as of noon today - the highest on record and the second day in a row that cases have exceeded 20,000.

There were also 160 deaths today, while the number of patients in ICU is more than 1,000.

  • Active cases: 221,396
  • Patients in ICU: 1,096
  • Intubated: 545

Most cases (12,059 cases; 57.7 percent) are detected through contact tracing, while another 6,871 cases (32.9 percent) are detected through other screening.

In addition, 1,946 cases (9.3 percent) have been linked to Covid-19 clusters, and 13 cases (0.06 percent) are imported from abroad.

Commenting on the rise in cases and the number of clusters, Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said part of the reason for the increasing cases is increased testing.

Due to high public awareness, many have undergone Covid-19 tests after experiencing symptoms or learning close contacts. It is found that about 70 percent of rapid antigen tests (RTK-Ag) are conducted by the private sector.

Another reason is the spread of the Delta variant, he said, with 199 cases identified in the community so far.

"The Delta variant has caused a faster and more aggressive infection rate and is less responsive to the treatment provided.

"Therefore, the Health Ministry urges people to always practice prevention measures, follow the standard operating procedures, and get the Covid-19 vaccines.

"Cases are expected to decline in late August once more than 40 percent of Malaysia's population have completed their vaccinations," he said.

Deaths

There were 160 fatalities today, bringing the death toll to 10,179. Of these, 39 have no history of chronic illness.

The deaths have been reported in Selangor (51), Johor (32), Kedah (22), Kuala Lumpur (17), Negeri Sembilan (14), Pahang (6), Sabah (5), Malacca (4), Terengganu (4), Perak (3), and Penang (2).

A total of 24 of the deceased had died before they were brought to a hospital.

At a press conference earlier today, Health Ministry deputy director-general (public health) Dr Chong Chee Kheong said most such cases - usually foreign citizens - were never diagnosed with the disease until they had died.

However, 20 percent of brought-in-dead cases had been diagnosed but were late in seeking treatment.
