Covid-19 (Aug 8): Record 360 people die in one day

COVID-19 | A total of 360 people have died from Covid-19 in a single day.

The fatalities are a significant jump from the previous record of 257 deaths in a day, set just four days ago on Aug 4.

A total of 1,723 people have died from Covid-19 this month so far.

The Health Ministry also reported 18,688 new cases amid records set in Sabah and Kedah.

The two states are at the bottom in terms of the single-dose vaccination rate at 37.8 percent and 43.4 percent respectively.

As of last night, the estimated daily R-naught for the country was 1.08. An R-naught of 1.00 and above suggests that the spread of Covid-19 was accelerating.

Apart from Labuan, nowhere else in the country has an R-naught of less than 1.00. The R-naught is the highest in Kelantan (1.25) and Perlis (1.45).

A total of 17,055 Covid-19 patients recovered today but they were still outpaced by new infections, contributing to a rise in active cases.

The cumulative cases now stand at 1,262,540.

Deaths

The 360 fatalities today put the death toll at 10,749.

The vast majority of the deaths were in Selangor with 221.

The remaining deaths were in Kuala Lumpur (41), Malacca (20), Perak (17), Penang (15), Johor (14), Kedah (7), Negeri Sembilan (6), Pahang (6), Sabah (5), Terengganu (5), Putrajaya (2) and Kelantan (1).

There are 97 more active clusters compared to a week ago when 1,116 active clusters were recorded.
