Covid-19 deaths (Oct 14): 68 reported fatalities, total at 27,593

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry's Github data repository reported a total of 68 Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Oct 13), bringing the cumulative death toll to 27,593.

Malaysia is the worst-performing country in East Asia in the number of Covid-19 deaths per capita.

From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 17.6 percent or 12 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.

Sarawak recorded the highest number of new deaths at 16, making up 23.5 percent of the newly reported fatalities.

The remaining deaths were in Johor (9), Perak (8), Kelantan (6), Sabah (6), Terengganu (4), Malacca (3), Pahang (3), Perlis (3), Penang (3), Selangor (3), Kedah (2) and Negeri Sembilan (2).

No new deaths were reported in Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.

This meant that three of the 68 fatalities were in the Klang Valley.

A total of 59 out of the 68 reported deaths or 86.8 percent occurred in the last seven days.

The remaining deaths happened more than a week ago but were only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.

An average of 216 Covid-19 deaths were reported daily in the last 30 days, compared to the seven-day average of 87, indicating a downward trend.

To date, 1,385 Covid-19 deaths have been reported this month.

As of yesterday, there were 106,047 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 19.8 percent from the 132,176 active infections a week ago.

Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 53.5 percent from 228,125.

The Health Ministry's post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections yesterday.

From the 7,950 new cases yesterday, a total of 500 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.

From the cluster-linked cases, 193 (38.6 percent) were from workplaces while 95 (19.0 percent) were from community transmissions.

Another 78 (15.6 percent) were from clusters linked to high-risk groups such as old folks homes.

The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to education institutions (66 - 13.2 percent), detention centres (44 - 8.8 percent) and religious events (24 - 4.8 percent).

Previously, the Health Ministry released deaths statistics together with the number of new Covid-19 cases in the evening. This has since changed.

Deaths statistics are now released after midnight, along with other more detailed data. Malaysiakini reports them in the morning.
