Covid-19 deaths (Dec 6): 40 reported fatalities, total at 30,614
COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported a total of 40 new Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Dec 5), bringing the cumulative death toll to 30,614.
Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 928 deaths per one million population.
From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 25 percent or 10 died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.
Johor recorded the highest number of new deaths at eight, making up 20 percent of the latest reported fatalities.
The remaining deaths were in Perak (6), Kedah (5), Sabah (4), Selangor (4), Terengganu (4), Sarawak (3), Pahang (2), Kelantan (1), Malacca (1), Negeri Sembilan (1) and Penang (1).
No new deaths were reported in Perlis, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
All 40 of the reported deaths (100 percent) happened in the last seven days.
An average of 47 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 44, indicating a downtrend.
As of yesterday, there were 61,999 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 6.7 percent from the 66,455 active infections a week ago.
Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 6.4 percent from 66,242.
The Health Ministry's post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections yesterday.
From the 4,298 new cases yesterday, a total of 136 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.
From the cluster-linked cases, 69 (50.7 percent) were from education institutions while 39 (28.7 percent) were from workplaces.
The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to religious events (13 - 9.6 percent), high-risk groups such as old folks homes (12 - 8.8 percent) and community transmissions (3 - 2.2 percent).
