YOURSAY | ‘Who wants a future with dirty water and no wildlife?’

With habitats shrinking due to logging, tigers prowl closer to humans

Kelantan denies logging cause of tiger mauling at Orang Asli village

Durian_Lazat: Continued deforestation is a national catastrophe. It is more than bad enough already.

Malaysia is the home of one of the world's oldest and most biodiverse forests, but we have almost destroyed this priceless heritage for short-term gain.

The value of logging and plantations is peanuts compared to the sustainable resources of vital water retention and filtration, steady rain production, carbon dioxide reduction, healthy soil, a sound and balanced ecological cycle, medicinal herbs, and not to mention, eco-tourism.

Who wants to visit palm plantations or logging sites? Who will come to Malaysia for its haze? Who wants a future with dirty water and no wildlife?

OrangeKite6045: There are so few of these beautiful animals left in Malaysia. But as usual, human greed and lack of education come before all else.

For a few extra ringgit, the species is almost certainly on the road to extinction along with most of the forests they live in.

The Observant: Did the Kelantan menteri besar really say that he would continue tearing down the forests if the state doesn’t get its oil royalties? Seriously?

Maya: Countries with huge populations are carrying out massive programmes.

Our neighbour, Thailand, is doing a fantastic job. Indonesia has implemented a plan to save the Sumatran tigers by working together with Wild Cats Conservation Centre. India too has a programme to save its big cats such as the Bengal tigers, cheetahs and Indian leopards.

Why is it that Malaysia is failing? We can’t even save humans in a catastrophe like floods.

Top Gun: At the rate tigers are being killed, soon we will only see tigers in the zoo or in storybooks.

By destroying their natural habitat due to greed and economic activities, the tigers are forced to venture out in search of food near to human population.

Whilst other countries are conscientiously protecting their endangered wildlife species, we are wiping them out at the easiest convenience instead of trying to relocate them.

By losing two tigers a year in less than a century, history will repeat itself when one day we will be searching for tiger fossils just like we do now with dinosaur fossils.

OldPerson: If three or four tigers encroach into a village - that means there's no more food for them to hunt in the forest. That means the forest has slowly disappeared.

So why is there no food and no forest for tigers? Are we really doing our job in monitoring illegal poachers?

KK Semenyih: What else is the reason? Lost of forests due to logging directly contributes to the loss of hunting grounds.

Thus, we are forcing these animals to wander out of their natural habitat to look for food. We've encroached into their habitat and destroyed it.

Stop logging activities immediately and stop destroying their habitat immediately if we are serious about saving these beautiful animals. Otherwise, our future generation will only see Malayan tigers in posters.

Casper C: Please exercise care and caution. This is a rare sighting but two things come to mind - the tiger may be a juvenile or injured to be hunting so close to human habitat.

The creature needs to be relocated as soon as possible. It’s best to evacuate the school and have it closed for a duration.

FairMalaysian: Ramli Mohd Nor, MP for Cameron Highlands and the first Orang Asli parliamentarian, had campaigned as a champion for the rights of Orang Asli.

Is he going to sit down with the PAS-led Kelantan government to discuss ways to prevent the logging activities that have disrupted the life of the Orang Asli?

Talk is easy, please show what you can do for the Orang Asli in Kelantan.

Anonymous 1092837465: Tigers threatening humans? What a joke. Isn’t it humans who have deprived them of their rights to their habitat?

It’s only unfortunate the Orang Asli have to bear the brunt.

GrayDove8171: Let's get this straight: Tigers are not a threat to humans. Humans are a threat to tigers.

We destroyed their habitat, which also reduced the number of their natural prey. Then we cry foul when they wander near our homes in search of food.

We built communities close to their habitat. Then we cry in fear when we spot them wandering nearby. What logic is this?

Do Not Buy Frogs: Human beings are the most dangerous species on earth because they are evil, greedy, corrupt and have no morals.

Especially our corrupt ‘politikus’.

PurpleTrout9039: In order to survive, Malaysian tigers will have no choice but to change their diet.

Instead of going near human settlements in search of food, they should learn to eat durians which are plentiful in the jungle, or maybe oil palms in the plantations.

Occasionally, they can eat meat when they happen to bump into a politician.
