Covid-19 (Jan 25): 4,066 cases, infectivity rate climbs to 1.09

This article is 3 years old

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 4,066 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,840,225.

They were more than the number of Covid-19 patients who recovered, which totalled 3,559. This is expected to contribute to a rise in the number of active cases, which has been rising steadily for over a week.

There are presently 45,208 active Covid-19 cases.

The infectivity rate also continued to climb to a new high since August last year, at 1.09. A sustained value above 1.0 will lead to exponential growth in fresh infections.

As of yesterday, states and territories with an R-number above 1.0 are Negeri Sembilan (1.16), Kedah (1.09), Johor (1.09), Kuala Lumpur (1.07), Malacca (1.04), Putrajaya (1.04), Selangor (1.04), Penang (1.03), and Pahang (1.01).

  • Patients in ICU: 131
  • Intubated: 65

As of today, the number of Covid-19 patients (including suspected ones) in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 28.4 percent lower compared to a week ago.

Those who require intubation have also declined by 22.6 percent from a week ago.

Nationally, the number of hospital admissions of confirmed Covid-19 patients in the last seven days has declined by 0.3 percent compared to the preceding week.

The hospital utilisation rate stands at 63.8 percent while the intensive care unit utilisation rate is at 54.1 percent.

The Health Ministry has cautioned that a new wave of Covid-19 cases involving the Omicron variant is imminent although it expects hospitals to be able to cope as the variant has less severe symptoms.

The Health Ministry will only publish today's breakdown of new cases by states after midnight on its CovidNow portal.

The breakdown by states for yesterday (Jan 24), when 3,214 new cases were reported, is as follows:

Selangor (816)
Johor (450)
Kedah (395)
Kuala Lumpur (249)
Negeri Sembilan (238)
Kelantan (231)
Penang (222)
Pahang (184)
Perak (120)
Sabah (118)
Malacca (80)
Terengganu (66)
Putrajaya (32)
Sarawak (7)
Perlis (4)
Labuan (2)

The Health Ministry also reported that genomic sequencing has been carried out on 162 Covid-19 samples between Jan 23 and Jan 25.

All 162 samples were identified as the Omicron variant, though most of them are imported cases. This brings the total number of genomically confirmed Omicron cases to 601 including 56 imported cases.

The local cases were detected in Sarawak (34), Selangor (12), Kedah (4), Labuan (4), and Sabah (2).

On Saturday, it also reported the findings of sequencing between Jan 19 and Jan 22 on 462 Covid-19 samples - all of which are identified as the Delta variant.

However, it should be noted that Malaysia has little sequencing capacity, which limits its ability to track the circulation of Covid-19 variants in the country or detect the emergence of new ones.

Sarawak has a relatively high sequencing capacity compared to the rest of the country, which results in more Covid-19 cases involving variants of concern being reported in the state.
