Covid-19 deaths (Feb 9): 13 reported fatalities, total at 32,056
COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported a total of 13 new Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Feb 8), bringing the cumulative death toll to 32,056.
Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 969 deaths per one million population.
The reported deaths were in Selangor (3), Kelantan (2), Perak (2), Sabah (2), Kedah (1), Penang (1), Terengganu (1) and Kuala Lumpur (1).
No new deaths were reported in Johor, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perlis, Sarawak, Labuan and Putrajaya.
An average of 13 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 10, indicating a downtrend.
As of yesterday, there were 83,071 active Covid-19 cases. This is an increase of 45.4 percent from the 57,149 active infections a week ago.
Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has increased by 108.1 percent from 39,927.
The rise of active cases comes as the Omicron wave picks up steam in Malaysia.
While the number of deaths is expected to be relatively low compared to earlier waves due to high vaccinations rates today, it should also be noted that trends in hospitalisations and deaths tend to lag several weeks behind case trends.
From the 13,944 new cases yesterday, a total of 347 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.
From the cluster-linked cases, 235 (67.7 percent) were from education institutions while 85 (24.5 percent) were from workplaces.
The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to high-risk groups such as old folks homes (18 - 5.2 percent), detention centres (8 - 2.3 percent) and community transmissions (1 - 0.3 percent).
The Health Ministry uploads the latest details of the Covid-19 pandemic after midnight on Github as part of its open data initiative.
